Monopoly has been a staple among board games since it was created by Hasbro. Many friends and family spend time together playing the game, and it’s become known as the most played board game in the world according to the 1999 Guinness Book of Records. People have spent a lot of time developing their Monopoly strategy and much has been written about the best ways to play the game. Below are some helpful tips and a guide to successful playing.

Properties

Monopoly Help GuideDecide in advance what properties will be the most profitable and set out to buy them. For example, the light blue set, which includes Oriental Avenue, Connecticut Avenue and Vermont Avenue, can generate more revenue in rent than other spaces. Also, the orange properties are valuable because players land on them more than any other spaces (from the jail, a roll of a 6 or an 8 will put the player on an orange space).

Trading

Trading properties with another player can help to build a monopoly. However, a player should be careful to trade only when it benefits them. If one player ones all but one of the orange set, and another player owns all but one of the blue set, a trade might work to both players advantage.

Building Houses

If a player owns a property, try and build three houses on that property. The rates for rents go up substantially after three houses are built on a property. For example, it can go from $350 to $750. That can be a good amount of extra revenue for a player.

Railroads

In general, buying railroads is a more sound investment than buying utilities. The reason for this is that there are more of them, and other players tend to land on them more often. This is a simple strategy, but railroads can be a good source of revenue even if the player does not own expensive properties.

Cash

Although a player cannot win Monopoly without buying properties, it’s important to keep some cash on hand. A good rule is to keep an amount of cash that’s equal to the highest amount of rent the player might have to pay. Separating that from the rest of the cash can be a good emergency fund and free the player to purchase more properties.

Jail

Although it’s rarely a good thing to be in jail, players can use it to their advantage. For example, towards the end of the game, when most properties are bought and rents are high, being in jail can be a break from paying. If a player lands in jail towards the beginning of the game, it’s usually better to pay the fine and get out so that they can continue to buy properties.

Playing the Game

Winning at Monopoly has almost as much to do with luck as it does with skill. Therefore, if another player is close to bankruptcy, don’t help them. With a few good rolls of the dice, that player may be back on top and make a complete comeback. In order to win at Monopoly, players have to protect themselves.

Be Aware

It may sound simple, but one of the best strategies for playing Monopoly is to pay attention to the game. Other players’ strategies may become apparent and opportunities may pop up that a player would miss if they weren’t playing close attention to the game.

The game of Monopoly has been around for over seventy-five years and it does not seem to be losing any of its popularity. As a result, there are many good websites and books that help players understand the game and develop a strategy. The best way to learn to win the game, however, is to play it as much as possible.
